Grassland Reserve
Program Funds Available for FY 2012
Application Deadline: February 24, 2012
New!
The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Farm Service
Agency (FSA) recently announced the availability of funds for the
Grassland Reserve Program (GRP) in Colorado for fiscal year 2012. The
GRP is a voluntary program offering landowners the opportunity to
protect, restore, and enhance grasslands on their property. The
deadline to submit applications is Friday, February 24, 2012.
“The GRP program was reauthorized by the 2008
Farm Bill and emphasizes support for working grazing operations,
enhancement of plant and animal biodiversity, and protection of
grasslands under threat of conversion to cropping, urban development,
and other activities,” said Phyllis Ann Philipps, NRCS State
Conservationist, Colorado.

Colorado Snowpack Remains Below Average
New!
January saw the Pacific jet stream finally begin to shift southward; by
mid January it had positioned itself over southern Wyoming and northern
and central Colorado bringing much needed precipitation to basins west
of the Continental Divide. In a reversal of conditions earlier this
season, basins east of the Divide saw very little snowfall during this
period. Unfortunately these storms were not enough to boost the
statewide snowpack significantly. Recent snow surveys conducted by the
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) show that Colorado's
snowpack continues to track below the long-term average according to
Phyllis Philipps, State Conservationist, with the NRCS.
Colorado's statewide snowpack was 72 percent of average as of February 1
and 62 percent of last year's readings at this same time. The increased
snowpack totals across western Colorado were somewhat offset by
decreased snowpack's across the southern and eastern basins. This has
resulted in nearly the same statewide snowpack percentage for two
consecutive months. |

Phyllis Philipps, Colorado State Conservationist for the U.S. Department
of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced
funding opportunities for its conservation programs. Authorized under
the 2008 Farm Bill, these federal programs will provide financial and
technical assistance to private landowners to better manage soil, water,
and other natural resources under the Environmental Quality Incentives
Program (EQIP) and the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP).
Applications are accepted on a continuous basis from interested
landowners. All completed applications received by
January 15, 2012 will be batched
and ranked for fiscal year 2012 General EQIP and WHIP funding. NRCS will
offer two ranking periods for the Air Quality Initiative:
February 3, 2012 and March 30, 2012.
The Organic, Seasonal High Tunnel, and On-Farm Energy initiatives will
offer three ranking periods: February 3,
2012, March 30, 2012, and June 1, 2012. |
