Four Range Schools Scheduled for Eastern Colorado

August 3, 2007

Ft. Collins, Colo.—Ranchers who want to learn more about protecting and preserving the rangeland resource on their ranches will have the opportunity to attend one of four range schools to be held in Eastern Colorado in September.

Locations for the four schools will be:
Wray, September 11, 4th and Main Street Grille
Greeley, September 13, Island Grove Park, 4-H Building
Kim, September 18, Kim High School Old Gym
Pueblo, September 20, Occhiato University Center, CSU- Pueblo

Registration costs for early registration at all schools is $25. Late and on-site registration is $50. Information and registration forms for each school can be obtained on-line. Go to the Colorado Section of the Society for Range Management (SRM) website at www.cssrm.org or contact your local conservation district or USDA Service Center.

Topics to be covered in each course include 1) why stewardship pays, 2) how plants grow and respond to grazing, 3) understanding and applying ecological site descriptions, 4) managing rangeland for desired outcomes, and 5) practical applications of range management, livestock nutrition, and monitoring. In addition, selected ranchers will give their perspective on range management.

Instructors will be John Valentine, Colorado State Land Board; Roy Roath, CSU Cooperative Extension; Floyd Reed, USFS (Retired); and local USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) rangeland management specialists.

Sponsors of the schools are the Colorado Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative Committee, Colorado Section SRM, Yuma County Conservation District (CD), West Greeley CD, Branson-Trinchera CD, Baca County CD, Fremont CD, CSU Cooperative Extension, Weld County Cooperative Extension, and NRCS.
