March 20th is National Ag Day

June 13, 2008

Lakewood, Colorado – National Agriculture Day occurs every year on the first day of Spring.  The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is proud to join countless agricultural producers and organizations, corporations, universities, and other government agencies to celebrate and honor the agriculture industry for providing safe, abundant and affordable products; helping contribute to a strengthening economy; and providing a viable source of alternative and renewable energy.

“Farmers and ranchers are our primary customers,” says Allen Green, NRCS State Conservationist, Lakewood, CO.  NRCS is a technical Agency of the US Department of Agriculture and takes the national lead in helping people conserve, maintain and improve their natural resources.  Our role is to provide technical and often times financial assistance to help our customers care for the land.  These are folks who have made agriculture and land stewardship their life’s work and we welcome any opportunity to help celebrate their contributions.”

Ag Day is about recognizing - and celebrating - the contribution of agriculture in our everyday lives and realizing that Ag lands are a desirable landscape and contribute to the quality of life all Americans enjoy.  “Most folks don’t realize the daily impact the Ag industry has on them,” Green goes on to say.  “Healthy ag lands play an integral role in our clean air; safe, affordable and abundant food and fiber; habitat for wildlife; pristine water; and open space.”

NRCS encourages everyone to get involved and begin to understanding agriculture and to celebrate Ag Day on March 20, 2008.  For ideas, activities, and resources to help celebrate, please visit www.agday.org .  For additional information about NRCS, please visit www.co.nrcs.usda.gov .
