USDA seeking comments on 2008 Farm Bill Program Rules and Regulations

February 2, 2009

Lakewood, CO – As the 2008 Farm Bill nears its final approval stage, Legislators are seeking public comments on many of the new Bill’s programs rules and regulations. Please visit http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/farmbill/2008/index.html more information about how to contribute comments. The 2008 Food, Conservation, and Energy Act, known as the 2008 Farm Bill, is authorized by Congress and governs federal farm and food policy, covering a wide range of programs, including commodity price and income support, farm credit, agricultural conservation, research, rural development, and foreign and domestic food programs, among others. Reauthorization of the Farm Bill occurs about every five years.

Although there are a number of provisions and titles within the Farm Bill, the NRCS administers many programs within the Conservation Title. “Our charge is to implement conservation Farm Bill programs and initiatives as we strive to meet the needs of our partners and customers targeting the natural resource conservation priorities within the State,” states Tim Carney, NRCS Assistant State Conservationist for Programs, Lakewood, CO. “Much like the recent statewide public input sessions we hosted aimed at gaining comments from customers about the natural resource priorities within the state, the Farm Bill public comment period is a national opportunity to provide input into conservation program rules.”

Most of the Farm Bill Conservation Title programs rules and regulations are open for comments and are published on the National Federal Register. Contributions received during the public comment period will be considered by the NRCS as final rules are made. “Comments are being taken for programs and initiatives including technical service providers, the Environmental Quality Incentives Program, the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program, the Wetlands Reserve Program, and many others,” Tim goes on to say.

For additional information regarding this news release please contact Petra Barnes Walker, NRCS State Public Affairs Specialist in Lakewood, CO at 720-544-2808 or by emailing petra.barneswalker@co.usda.gov. Program rules, including information on providing comments are also available on the Colorado NRCS website located at www.co.nrcs.usda.gov.
