NRCS Provides $860,000 to Combat Colorado Invasive Plant Species

Lakewood, CO - The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has approved 11 of 13 proposals submitted to help control Colorado invasive plant species. This year marks the fourth year the agency has provided financial assistance to this widespread issue. Landowners who meet funding requirements are encouraged to apply by Friday, June 19, 2009.

Invasive plant species are a major issue in Colorado,” said Tim Carney, Assistant State Conservationist for Programs, NRCS, Lakewood, CO. “NRCS is committed to coordinating with state and local partners to address priority invasive species control efforts.”

The eleven funded projects are:

  • Chico Creek Project (El Paso and Pueblo counties) – Tamarisk/Russian Olive control
  • Republican River Riparian Area Watershed Restoration Project (Yuma County) - Tamarisk/Russian Olive control
  • Prowers County Invasive Species Project (Prowers County) – Tamarisk/Russian Olive control
  • San Miguel Basin Project (Montrose and San Miguel counties) – Hoary Cress/Russian Knapweed/Sulfur Cinquefoil control
  • Four Mile Creek Watershed Project (Fremont County) – Tamarisk/Russian Olive/Diffuse Knapweed/Hoary Cress/Leafy Spurge/Russian Knapweed/Perennial Pepperweed/Scotch Thistle control
  • Saint Vrain-Boulder Creek Project (Boulder and Weld counties) – Mediterranean Sage/Purple Loosestrife/Diffuse and Russian Knapweed/Hoary Cress/Tamarisk/Perennial Pepperweed/Russian Olive Control
  • Rio Grande Conservation District Project (Rio Grande County) – Hoary Cress/Perennial Pepperweed/Yellow Toadflax/Russian Knapweed/Scotch Thistle/Black Henbane control
  • Saguache/Kerber Creek Project (Saguache County) – Russian Knapweed/Black Henbane/Hoary Cress/Perennial Pepperweed control
  • Bent Conservation District (Bent County) – Tamarisk/Russian Olive control
  • Morgan Conservation District Project (Morgan County) – Purple Loosestrife/Diffuse Knapweed/Leafy Spurge/Russian Olive/Salt Cedar control
  • Custer County Project (Custer County) – Dalmatian Toadflax/Houndstongue/Leafy Spurge/Perennial Pepperweed/Yellow Toadflax control
