Rural communities often find it difficult to locate and acquire funds and other resources to improve the quality of life for their citizens. Opportunities are available to support this endeavor, through the USDA's Resource Conservation and Development Program (RC&D).  RC&Ds work through  councils of local citizens and USDA staff to find resources to benefit rural communities.

Colorado has eight  authorized RC&D areas serving 45 of the states 65 counties. These RC&Ds are active in the following projects as well as many others:

  • Assisting communities improve facilities to treat solid liquid waste
  • Developing historic landmarks to attract tourism
  • Developing local agricultural industries to provide employment in rural Colorado
  • Reducing encroachment of noxious weeds on rangelands and pasture land
  • Implementing environmental education
  • Developing parks and recreational facilities
  • Initiating regional recycling projects

RC&D's goals are:

  1. To promote conservation development and use of natural resources
  2. To improve the general level of economic activity
  3. To enhance the environment and standard of living in communities
