Conservation Reserve Program/CRP

The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) was authorized under the 1985 Food Security Act (FSA). The CRP offered long-term rental payments to farm owners to remove land from annual crop production. Lands with high erosion rates or lands contributing to a serious water quality problem were targeted. In addition, cost-share assistance was offered to establish permanent vegetative cover on enrolled land.

The first sign-up period ran from March 3, 1986 to March 14, 1986. Contracts were for a ten year period. We are now in sign-up period twenty. Many of the first contracts have expired.
