Forestry Incentive Program (FIP)

The Secretary of Agriculture established the voluntary cooperative Forestry Incentive Program (FIP).  Through this program NRCS works with landowners to develop, manage, and protect non-industrial private forest land by encouraging the production of softwood and hardwood timber and other associated forest resources.  Eligible practices include tree planting, timber stand improvement, site preparation for natural regeneration, and other related activities.  The FIP is available in counties designated by a Forest Service survey of eligible private timber acreage.

The objective to the Forestry Incentive Program is to increase the nations supply of timber products with emphasis on:

  • Afforestation of suitable land
  • Reforestation
  • Timber stand improvement
  • Forest management and protection

FIP provides cost share assistance for completing practices such as thinning for timber, stand improvement, and tree planting for restoration after fire or logging. Since the program is intended to increase wood fibre production, forest site production capability of 50 cubic feet of wood per acre per year is a requirement for a site to be eligible for cost share.  These are over 1.2 million acres in Colorado counties that meet the site productivity capability requirements of 50 cubic feet of wood per acre per year. Of these many need need timber stand improvement treatments and reforestation.
