Iron Mountain Fire Emergency Watershed Protection/EWP Program Report

COUNTIES AFFECTED: LIST COUNTIES and DEGREE AFFECTED:  Fremont County  was severely affected.

DAMAGE ASSESSMENTS: 7,000 Acres burned including timber, brush, and grass. Grass is burning on private land and Bureau of Land Management land located 12 miles southwest of Canon City, Colorado.  100 structures, including homes, mobile homes, outbuildings, and a store have burned.

EWP ACTIONS TO DATE: Phone calls with District Conservationist

HUMAN INTEREST EXAMPLES: 1,000 people have been evacuated from South Canon City. Royal Gorge Park has been evacuated.

URGENT PROBLEMS AND/OR NEEDS: (additional comments) There are high temperatures, low humidity, and gusting winds, along with the pinyon juniper type fuels.

Limited resource communities affected: None

Projects (such as PL-566, RC&D) that have helped to limit DAMAGES:  The Canon City Watershed in South Canon City.
